A ukulele, also called a "uke", is in the family of stringed instruments and looks like a small, four-stringed version of a guitar. The instrument has long been associated with Hawaii, but its origins were actually in Portugal. In the late 1870s, Portuguese sailors brought a ukulele-type instrument called the braguinhato the Hawaiian Islands. The native Hawaiians were impressed when they saw the speedy and intricate finger-work of the man playing the stringed instrument; they dubbed it a "ukulele", which means "jumping flea" in English. In only a decade, it became Hawaii’s most popular instrument. The ukulele is a cheerful, fun instrument to play. You can get as good as you care to, and play music as complex as you like, but to learn the basics is quick, easy, and fun. In fact, because it is easy to learn, uke can be a great alternative to guitar for music enthusiasts under the age of eight. And it has become very popular with artists like Train and Jason Mraz.

Ukulele FAQs
There are four main sizes of ukulele. They are: soprano, concert, tenor and baritone.

For beginners, we don't recommend the baritone. They're tuned differently from the others and it's much harder to get stated.

Of the other sizes, soprano is the traditional ukulele size and the one most often used by beginners.

Concert and tenor sizes will give you more room to maneuver on the fretboard. Tenor is the size used by most professional players these days. Both concert and tenor will work well for new uke players.
Two good options for beginners are the Lanikai LU-21 and the Kala KA-S.There are several models at Guitar Center that are great for beginners.
We are often asked to recommend instruments for beginners. We are happy to now sell these instruments on our website.
